Compare specifications and it actually compares well with its rivals on price. You get an added bonus, too: it won’t lose as much of its value over time as other ’vans would. It may be the world’s second largest carmaker, but Volkswagen still takes a keen interest in the campervan market. It typically sells some 400 Californias at 36 of its van centres, arguably making it the most popular camper in the UK. If you want to be one of them, head to your local Volkswagen Van Centre. The California is the only campervan that’s completely manufactured by Volkswagen: the rest are made by specialist manufacturers of varying degrees of pedigree. Now we have the T6, the latest-generation Volkswagen Transporter, on which the VW California Ocean you see here is based. It may not look that different from the T5 that it’s replaced, but it’s meant a choice of cleaner, more fuel-efficient Euro 6 engines, all manner of safety enhancements and more. Indeed, Volkswagen lists some 6000 changes to the T6 over the T5. Some of the most significant in terms of safety include a Driver Alert System, Brake Assist, an Automotive Post-Collision Braking System and so on. In short, it’s the best VW Transporter to date: it’s more powerful, more economical, quieter, better equipped, sturdier and safer. Yes, it’s more expensive. But the overall dimensions remain exactly the same as those of the T5. In T6 guise, there are two flavours: Beach and Ocean. Here we have the latter and the higher-trim Ocean is a standard-bearer for the entire class of T6-based ’vans, and a great indicator of the characteristics you can expect when a carmaker turns its attention to campervan production. The furniture and mouldings are of superior quality. Volkswagen also retains the premium dashboard for its own product. Integral blinds for the side and rear windows, all-LED rear lights, twin chrome strips on the front grille (rivals just get the single ones) and other details are reminders that the Ocean is a cut above the rest of the fleet. It is by no means perfect, though. Practicality may not always have been at the forefront of its designers’ thoughts. The gas cylinder surrounded by the fresh water tank isn’t liked by everyone. And while overall storage is decent, it lacks the imaginative ideas that other converters can offer. Moreover, despite being able to call upon lots of optional extras, the majority of these focus on the base vehicle rather than enhancing the camping side of things. The conversion isn’t switched to right-hand drive, either; hence, the sliding door is on our offside (we appreciate its power latch, but that doesn’t compensate). The small, top-loading fridge is definitely a love-it/loathe-it item. In addition, interior lighting is acceptable, rather than generous. Nevertheless, the majority would agree that here is a campervan that is head-and-shoulders above its contemporaries. It needn’t cost more, either. Spec-for-spec comparisons actually favour the California – especially because the standard equipment includes clever features, for example, the electrically operated aluminium elevating roof, an outdoor table that is stowed in the sliding door, folding lounge chairs in the tailgate and a programmable diesel heating system. It’s a full four-berth from the start, too, and the better bed is the one in the roof. The rear seat is automotive quality and boasts fold-away head restraints. There’s an option to add a fifth, removable, travel seat, too. Volkswagen only offers the California Ocean with two choices of engine – the 150PS and 204PS – albeit along with a range of DSG automatic transmission and 4Motion all-wheel driving configurations. Aug 30, 2019 at 10:36am ET It’s not a stretch to say Volkswagen started the whole camper van movement with its classic Type 2 way back in the 1950s. Flash forward to 2019 – VW has a new cool mini motorhome that will make its public debut at this year’s 2019 Caravan Salon. Rather, it’s sort of new, as it’s based on the familiar California that already has camping provisions. This one is a bit different, however, in that it gets its own mini-kitchen along with seating for seven. Camping The VW Way: Officially called the California it’s a product of Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles and in ordinary life, it functions as a normal van with seating for up to seven people. However, this version offers something new compared to other California campers – the ability to add the mini-kitchen without ditching the extra seating. In that sense, this van becomes a proper family vehicle through the week, with the ability to embrace off-grid life on the weekends. Gallery: Volkswagen California Beach The mini-kitchen stows behind the driver seat between the B and C pillars, and includes a single gas burner with a small workspace to the right. When not in use, the mini kitchen fits neatly into the van’s wall. In its stowed configuration, it takes up no more passenger space than a standard California without the option. As for other camping items, the California features a pop-up aluminum roof with canvas sides, a roof bed, a fold-away table, and the rear bench seat folds to create another sleeping area. Source: Volkswagen Hide press release Show press release Caravan Salon 2019: world première of the California Beach with new mini kitchen Hannover, 29 August 2019 – Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles is presenting a further surprise as part of the world première of the new California at the Caravan Salon in Dusseldorf (31 Aug. to 8 Sept.): for the first time the entry-level Beach version will have a kitchen. Until now this was reserved for the more exclusive Coast and Ocean lines. New this time: unlike the large row of kitchen units in the Coast and Ocean, being used in the Beach is a completely reworked fold-out mini kitchen. While, due to the broader kitchen, the Coast and Ocean are universally offered with a two-seater bench in the passenger compartment, the California Beach can, thanks to the narrower mini kitchen, also optionally be ordered with a three-seater bench. That opens up the possibility for the first time for families of five to go camping with a California, complete with kitchen on board. The new California Beach with mini kitchen and motorhome type approval is being given the suffix ‘Camper’; the Beach version with passenger car type approval and no mini kitchen will from now on carry the extra name ‘Tour’. New on the Tour: in future it is getting two sliding doors as standard – on the left and right. Previously the Beach was available with the sliding door on the right only. Both Beach versions – Tour and Camper – are additionally united by the fact that a new digital camper control unit in the roof console adds to the standard specification (for the previous model there was no camper control unit). For the first time it is also possible for both models to order hydraulic operation of the pop-up roof as an option instead of manual operation. In this case, the opening and closing of the roof is controlled, like many other functions, via the camper control new mini kitchen broadens the versatility of the California Beach. To use it, it is pulled up and out of the side panel between the B- and C-pillar and folded out. The stainless steel unit has a single-hob gas cooker on the left and a worktop on the right. Over the gas cooker there is also a cover plate, which when lifted up for cooking serves as a splashback. If the mini kitchen's hotplate/worktop is not needed, you simply tip it up and lower it back into the side panel, which, incidentally, despite mini kitchen is no wider than its counterpart with no kitchen. Under the hotplate/worktop against the side wall is a large, open storage compartment and an enclosed compartment for the gas bottle. The California is generally used in everyday life like any normal MPV. Often by families. There is then sometimes the need to carry more than four or five people. For such situations Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles offers individual seats on the second seating row. Despite the fitted kitchen, the new California Beach provides room here to use not just one, but two individual seats. With the mini kitchen closed, the bench seat and individual seats can be repositioned without any restrictions at all. Depending on bench seat version on the third row, the camper thus becomes a six- or seven-seat MPV. Note, however, that any Beach with type approval as a motorhome has a maximum of five seats. Anyone wanting to use the Beach with mini kitchen and six or seven seats should therefore simply order it as the Tour version with passenger car type approval rather than as the Camper, choose not to have the left sliding door and add the mini kitchen. The compact design of the variable kitchen underlines the fact that the California is more than ever the true all-rounder in the compact motorhome market. Since its inception in 1947, the VW Type II van has become the symbol for any wandering tribe of free-spirited individuals not only as a vehicle, but as a home. Its self-reliant nature and simple design have allowed it not only to persist, but to become cemented as a symbol of the counterculture movement of the ’60s as well as part of the camping pantheon. These German vans have become as much a symbol as they are a vehicle, representing seemingly endless possibilities. And that legacy endures to this your humble scribe spent three days in Canada driving the new Volkswagen camper van, the California Ocean, around the southern half of Nova Scotia, covering over 400 miles of pine-lined rustic shores and sprawling interior farmlands. Although VW sent us to this Canadian coastal province to drive a van named after the state son closely identified with boxy Vee-Dubs, neither Canadians nor Californians can have one; it’s not sold in North America. Volkswagen, it seems, just wanted us to know what we were missing. Buy NowWhat We LikeThe updated looks of the 2020 California Ocean — a new front bumper and an enlarged grill for added airflow to the engine — don’t seem overly striking at first; indeed, it somehow looks both very large and compact all at the same time. But the two-tone white on copper finish that our vans had gave the VWs a retro look that simultaneously managed to be modern and appeal was clear: whenever we stopped, someone would pull up alongside the van and ask a flurry of questions — and inevitably walk away sad when they heard they couldn’t have one. It’s no Italian sports car, but the mix of strange beauty and German practicality here is hard to the the California has been loaded with even more comfort- and efficiency-minded gadgets. The interior feels truly massive — at least by New York City apartment standards. The cabin has an hoest-to-god lounge feel, made possible by its driver and passenger seats’ nifty trick of turning 180-degrees, allowing them to face the rear bench (slash fold-out bed that sleeps two) and camper-van-classic fold-out list of features certainly doesn’t stop there. Y’all ready? The California also has (deep breath) a two-burner propane stovetop, refrigerator, sink, cold-water shower, on-board water and propane tanks, twin removable tables and chairs, an awning, a diesel-powered heater and more Batmobile-esque gadgets that would take years of ownership to spite of all those features, the interior feels well-thought-out. A few new touches include aluminum handles for the interior cabinetry, wood trim and flooring, new push-to-release mechanisms for some of the kitchen appliances and updated upholstery. Though some of these details may feel small on their own, they add up to a vehicle that feels much more like a home than a van ought course, there are still some classic features it shares with some of the camper vans of yore. The California is still fitted with that iconic feature, the pop-top roof bed that sleeps an additional two people. Unlike the Microbuses and Westfalias of the past, these new iterations aren’t a canvas tent with a sliding piece of wood for a bed. The has a new bed design with a built-in box spring and queen-size mattress surrounded by a sturdy, almost white-water-raft like material, and it can be deployed in less than two minutes with the push of a button. The van also has a digital pitch gauge allowing the driver to find a level spot setting up you decide, like I did, to forgo the new alarm clock feature (in which the cabin lights gently fade on at whatever time you choose), the pop-up tent has zip-open flaps on all four walls to allow the sunrise to wake you. It’s also great for letting in some fresh air if the diesel heater has been cooking a little too hard through the is a new display at the helm, which acts as the pilot’s right-hand man. This screen is home to a heap of controls for the technological wonders of the modern motoring (and camping) world. VW calls it the Volkswagen Digital Cockpit; it controls the auxiliary heater and fan, cabin lights, Apple CarPlay, sat-nav and pop-top mechanism. You can track the power you’re using from this same screen; on a full charge, the van’s camping accessories can run for nearly 40 hours. And even if you run the cabin power flat over a weekend, never fear; the motor and radio are on their own dedicated easy to forget this thing is a vehicle when it’s parked, but it drives pretty well too. The turbocharged inline-four provides plenty of power, while the three-way adaptive suspension provides a smooth highway ride in Comfort Mode and an appropriately responsive one when you hit the button for the rather-unexpected Sport Out ForIt may be surprisingly good to drive, but that can lead you to feel a bit too trusting in the corners — a potentially hazardous issue with something that is nearly 10 feet tall and clocking in at 6,000 pounds. You really do have to keep its limitations in mind, because it is working hard to hide them from bigger issue though: it’s really expensive. Although there is a lot of value here, the price tag can be shocking: up to $99,000 for the fully-loaded Ocean package I tested. The differences between a base model and a fully-optioned one aren’t that extreme, essentially coming down to a flip-out kitchen instead of a fixed one and a handful of aesthetic items. The optioned-out model was a blast to spend a weekend in, but if these were available Stateside, I’d grab the simple, no-frills version and save tens of thousands of dollars while still having largely the same experience. VerdictEven though it’s too expensive for me, the new VW California Ocean has made me even more jealous of our European friends’ ability to spend the weekend in one of the excellent new iterations of VW’s long line of adventure machines. Ook bij dit model is er een hefdak voorzien dat je manueel kan openen. De Coast heeft als extra het Composition radio system en extra veiligheidssystemen zoals de vermoeidheids assistent. De keuken die is opgebouwd uit een aluminium sandwichstructuur, heeft een moderne ‘White Wood’ look (witachtig hout uitzicht) met een 2-pits gasfornuis met piëzo-ontsteking. De keuken is volledig functioneel uitgerust, inclusief een spoelbak. De ingebouwde koelkast werkt op compressie. On prête beaucoup de qualités au VW California ? Trop, sans doute. Aussi séduisant soit-il, le petit van aménagé de Volkswagen n’est pas exempt de toutes critiques. A piori, il est difficile de résister au VW California, considéré comme la référence absolue des vans et des monospaces de loisirs, malgré une facture pour le moins dissuasive : à partir de pour la finition Coast, qui représente l’essentiel des ventes en France. Et la note va encore grimper de 1,5% au 1er janvier 2018. La valeur de revente élevée du California sert souvent d’adjuvant pour faire passer la pilule du prix d’achat… Pour autant, l’investissement n’est-il pas trop élevé, à l’heure où la concurrence fourbit ses armes ? En bref, la réputation du California n’est-elle pas trop exagérée ? Quelles sont ses marges de progression et quelles sont sont aujourd’hui les véritables alternatives au VW California ? Radiographie du phénomène California. VW California : le toit est électrique sur trois des quatre versions. Aujourd’hui, le California se conjugue au pluriel, tant les déclinaisons sont nombreuses. Au-delà des quatre principales variantes (Beach, Edition30, Coast, Ocean), presque exclusivement en 4 places CG de série, il faudrait ajouter les multiples configurations liées au choix de la motorisation essence ou diesel et de la transmission (4 Motion). Au total, à la seule lecture du tarif VW, c’est-à-dire sans les options et les finitions, on compte déjà quarante versions… Bref, la famille du California est très étendue et toutes les ramifications partent d’un tronc commun, le VW T6 disponible, pour l’instant, dans une seule et unique longueur (5,06m) et un empattement de 3 m. La hauteur de 1,99 m à vide ne change pas quelles que soient les versions et la dimension des jantes : 18” sur la série Edition 30, contre 16” sur le Beach TDI 150 et TSI 150. La compensation se fait par la hauteur du flanc du pneu (taille basse de 45 sur l’Edition 30 et 65 sur le Beach). Héritier direct du légendaire Westfalia Joker, le California apparaît en 1988, sur T3, c’est-à-dire la troisième génération du VW Transporter (T3), sur lequel le moteur refroidi par air se situe à l’arrière. La transformation intérieure, simple et fonctionnelle sur les premières versions, est confiée à Westfalia, l’aménageur historique et partenaire privilégié de VW jusqu’en 2004, date à laquelle le constructeur auto reprend totalement la main sur le California. Aujourd’hui, le célèbre van est d’abord produit à l’usine de Hanovre-Stöcken, comme l’ensemble des Transporter, puis terminé dans l’unité spécialisée de Limmer, où il reçoit la structure de toit, les placards, la kitchenette, la banquette et l’ensemble des autres équipements de loisirs. Il se vend aujourd’hui 16 000 California en Europe, dont 600 en France. Ces chiffres en font le leader des fourgons à toit relevable. VW California : une longueur, quatre finitions et cinq motorisations diesel ou essence. Sujet de discussion et point d’attaque de la concurrence, les délais de livraison du VW California s’échelonnent généralement entre six et douze mois… C’est assez surprenant, mais la configuration du California n’a pas beaucoup évolué au fil du temps et s’appuie toujours sur un mobilier fixe disposé dans la longueur du véhicule, le long de la paroi gauche. Cet ensemble comprend des rangements, penderie et placards, et une petite cuisine tout équipée avec réfrigérateur, évier et un réchaud deux feux raccordés à une bouteille de gaz de 2,8 kg. Une table intérieure sur glissière et une banquette 2 places convertible et coulissante complètent le tableau. Le toit aluminium se soulève, manuellement sur le Beach, électriquement sur les autres versions, et abrite une chambre haute munie d’un classique sommier à lattes en bois de 200 x 120 cm et d’une mousse de faible épaisseur. Sur le couchage bas, obtenu après transformation de la banquette, on ajoutera en option un sur-matelas confort, fortement recommandé. L’optimisation des espaces passe par le choix d’un mobilier fin, léger et rigide, réalisé en sandwich d’aluminium avec un noyau minéral, de type Alucobond. L’absence d’isolation, pleinement assumée par VW, permet aussi de gagner du volume intérieur, selon le constructeur… Loin d’être totalement irréprochable, le VW California soulève encore des remarques, sinon des critiques. → Manipulation du hayon, très encombrant et lourd. La difficile compression des vérins étant justifiée par l’installation possible en post équipement d’un porte-vélos sur le hayon. En revanche, pas de fermeture électrique en option, à l’inverse du Multivan et de la Caravelle. → Aucune isolation de la carrosserie. La puissance du chauffage stationnaire, de série sur toutes les versions, à l’exception du Beach, compense très largement cette lacune. Sur le Beach, l’option chauffage est fortement conseillée. En plus d’être un avantage à l’usage, c’est un atout très fort à la revente. → Banquette arrière plane sans maintien lombaire ni accoudoir central. Pour les passagers, ça balance un peu dans les virages. → 4 places CG de série sur les versions loisirs et 5 pour le Beach en option gratuite avec banquette AR 3 places. Avec le Beach, on peut même pousser jusqu’à sept places, avec deux fauteuils passagers supplémentaires. Les versions 4 Motion restent en 4 places CG, y compris sur le Beach. → Volume d’eau propre de 30 L (pas forcément une contrainte le temps d’un week-end, mais plus gênant au-delà.) Et n’espérez pas trouver de l’eau chaude au robinet de la cuisine ou de la douchette extérieure. Ce n’est pas forcément une priorité par les clients qui font chauffer de l’eau sur le réchaud en cas de besoin. → Aucune personnalisation de l’ambiance intérieure. La couleur du mobilier varie selon les niveaux de finitions (et donc le prix) : imitation bois blanc pour la finition Coast et Edition, bois sombre pour l’Océan. En revanche, très large palette de couleurs de carrosseries, parmi des peintures métallisées, nacrées ou bicolores. → Fragilité. Le VW California n’est pas exempt de reproches. Ce qui est le plus souvent mis en avant, c’est la fragilité de la petite quincaillerie, à l’image des stores, des charnières, la faiblesse de la coupelle de remplissage de l’eau propre ou l’évacuation inefficace de l’évier… Les évolutions successives corrigent le tir, notamment sur le système de verrouillage du volet de pare-brise (des clapets remplacent les aimants) ou l’ouverture des abattants réchaud / évier, ou du couvercle du réfrigérateur. → Toit électrique. Généralisation du toit électrique relevable sur les versions Coast, Ocean et Edition 30. Certains le regrettent et n’accordent qu’une confiance mesurée au mécanisme de motopompe hydraulique électrique sur le long terme. Dans la mesure où le toit peut supporter 50 kg de charge (coffre ou porte-vélos sur barre de toit), VW justifie son choix du tout électrique. → VP/VASP. Dans sa version première, le Beach est redevable du bonus écologique, dans la mesure où il est homologué en VP et non en VASP. Le surcout n’est pas neutre. California, une famille à succès depuis 30 ans CONCLUSION C’est vrai, au regard du prix du California, on peut raisonnablement se poser la question : n’est-ce pas trop cher payé tout de même ? Le prix ne nous met pas forcément à l’abri des petits tracas et soucis techniques que connait le California, considéré comme un véhicule assez fragile. Les loueurs ne s’en cachent pas. Il faut en prendre soin. Avec ses quatre places carte grise, il se montre pour le moins décalé par rapport aux besoins des familles qui veulent transporter toute la tribu ou accessoirement les copains des enfants lors des sorties sportives. La cinquième place CG, en option à la commande, prend la forme d’un siège complémentaire et démontable en 2ième rang, derrière la cabine. Dans ce cas, Il faut repousser d’autant la banquette et retirer la plateforme arrière du lit si l’on veut profiter d’un maximum d’espace pour les jambes. Notez encore que ce siège additionnel, peu commode à manipuler, car assez lourd, interdit aussi la transformation du couchage bas… Il faut le démonter au préalable. On le voit, ce n’est pas la panacée. La seule solution acceptable, c’est de passer sur le California Beach, de conception plus simple (pas de cuisine et toit pop- up manuel), disponible en 5 places CG sur demande et sans supplément de prix. Attention, tout de même, c’est un VP ! Quoi qu’il en soit, le VW California reste tout de même une très belle référence, même si tout n’est pas parfait. On ne saurait lui opposer uniquement des arguments rationnels, tant la dimension affective compte beaucoup dans la décision d’achat de ce véhicule, chic, malin, porteur d’images et de sens. Le prix de vente lui donne un caractère très exclusif qui renforce sa valeur de revente… Le cercle vertueux. Rien ne semble pouvoir entamer le capital sympathie qui l’entoure. QUI SONT LES CONCURRENTS DU VW CALIFORNIA ? Les concurrents, ils sont très nombreux. Nous en avons retenu trois en raison de leur conception sur VW et leur banquette coulissante. Westfalia KEPLER ONE Commercialisé à partir de 2016, le Westfalia Kepler One fait légèrement mieux que le VW California, dans un format de fourgon, il est vrai, supérieur : 5,30 m, contre 4,89 m. Le flanc gauche étant libéré de la cuisine, contrairement au plan classique du California, le Kepler One dégage un espace de vie pour le moins inhabituel et plutôt sympathique. Pas de banquette coulissante sur le Kepler One, mais un espace propreté composé d’un WC fixe à cassette et d’un bac à douche dans le plancher. Là encore, c’est une disposition rare sur un aménagement VW T6. Le volume d’eau (50 L) et la capacité du réfrigérateur à compression (51 L) sont aussi plus favorables sur le Kepler One. En somme, elle suit le mouvement de la banquette ! Notez encore les très belles finitions intérieures, des détails inédits (réservoirs d’eau amovibles qui facilitent le remplissage) et le toit relevable manuel. Lando pousse la comparaison jusqu’à développer un mobilier réalisé dans un matériau comparable à celui du California en sandwich d’aluminium de 6 mm d’épaisseur. Léger et résistant, il permet des cintrages et des formes très pures impossibles à réaliser avec le bois. Avec la banquette coulissante 3 places, le Lando Adelaïde surclasse même le California. Et côté prix, il n’y a pas photo ! Vor allem als hat der Bulli mit dem Facelift viel wenn es primär um Nutzwert und die Option auf Abenteuer geht, stört das nicht. Beim Preis schlägt der Marco Polo mit Euro den California locker. Dann arbeitet ein 1,7-Liter-Diesel mit 102 PS und 270 Newtonmetern Drehmoment im Bug. Im Mercedes Marco Polo werden knapp Euro für 136 PS und eine Neungang-Automatik California gilt es zu bedenken, dass die günstigste Version der California Beach Camper ist. Hier baut VW serienmäßig eine Mini-Küche ein. Das begrenzt die Möglichkeiten der Sitzkonfiguration, erweitert aber auch den Camping-Nutzen. Die „Miniküche“ besteht aus einem kleinen Schrank mit einflammigem Gaskocher, der links zwischen B- und C-Säule eingebaut wird. Die Schiebetür links entfällt damit als Option. Die mögliche Liegefläche wird schmaler. Die Mitnahme eines tragbaren Gaskochers kann also die bessere Lösung können Marco Polo Activity und California Beach als CamperMarco Polo Activity und California Beach bleiben ihrem Wesen nach Großraum-Vans. Ihre Camping-Eignung ergibt sich aus dem Aufstelldach mit Bett. Und aus Sitzbänken, die sich zur Bettlandschaft umbauen lassen. Der VW ist mit gut 4,90 Metern etwas kürzer als der Mercedes mit 5,14 Metern. Für manche Fähren ein Faktor in puncto Ticket-Preis. Hier ist das Bett mit 2,05 Metern eine Spur länger, dafür schmaler. 1,13 Meter gibt Mercedes an, es geht also sehr kuschelig der unteren Etage lassen sich in beiden Campern je nach Sitzkonfiguration fünf bis sieben Personen transportieren. Dazu sind zwei Schlafplätze möglich. Das Bett ist breiter als unter dem Dach, eine Schlafauflage lassen sich VW und Mercedes extra bezahlen. Die Vordersitze können sich serienmäßig drehen. Mercedes bietet für knapp 600 Euro einen klappbaren Tisch an, der sich im Innenraum verschieben lässt. Bei VW ist ein Campingtisch für innen und außen Serie. Hormis la continuité d’un certain état d’esprit et une polyvalence affirmée, il n’y a vraiment plus rien de commun entre le California d’aujourd’hui et l’antique Combi. Différence majeure: le Transporter aménagé d'aujourd'hui est ultra-confortable. C’est au début des années cinquante qu’un artisan d’outre-Rhin installa à son bord le premier aménagement. Soixante ans après, l’histoire n’a plus de secret. Le Combi devint Transporter et, à son bord, Volkswagen se charge désormais de l’aménagement qui a beaucoup évolué. Et six générations de Transporter plus tard, la légende perdure. Eure Meinung zählt - jetzt den Campingbus Vergleich bewerten[Gesamt: 161 Durchschnitt: der Suche nach einem Nachfolger für unseren VW T5 California haben wir uns nicht leicht getan und auch die V-Klasse von Mercedes in Erwägung gezogen. Doch allein bei Volkswagen kamen 3 Modelle in Frage. Der California Beach, California Coast und das Flaggschiff der California Ocean, welcher auch als Hotel California bekannt ist. Die Entscheidung ist uns nicht leicht gefallen. Ausgangssituation Wir hatten seit vielen Jahren unseren geliebten VW T5 California und suchten einen passenden Diesel Nachfolger mit Euro 6 Norm, um damit hoffentlich auch zukünftig in größere Städte fahren zu können. Letzte Woche dann ein Beitrag im Spiegel, das VW die Auslieferung des VW T6 gestoppt hat, weil die Stickoxidwerte zu hoch sind. Kein gutes Vorzeichen, aber angeblich kann es mit einem Softwareupdate behoben werden. Vielleicht wäre der Mercedes Marco Polo oder der Marco Polo Horizon doch die bessere Wahl. Der Konzern stand mit solchen Themen zumindest noch nie im Rampenlicht. Die Küchenzeile kommt im Marco Polo sehr edel daher. In Kombination mit den Schiffsdiehlen als Bodenbelag und der indirekten Beleuchtung geht das schon fast Richtung Glamping. Wir sind zwei Erwachse nicht besonders groß (unter 180 cm;), mit unseren zwei Kindern aktuell 8 und 9 Jahre alt und unserem Hund Lenny. Wir haben nur ein Auto und leben stadtnah und besuchen auch gern im Urlaub Städte, so dass ein Tiefgaragen taugliches Fahrzeug fast ein muss für uns ist. Was spricht für ein fahrendes Hotel VW California Ganz einfach – der Komfort. Das haben wir in unseren California zumindest sehr geschätzt. Denn die gut 30 cm breiten Küchenzeile ist eigentlich auch der größte Unterschied zwischen den California Modellen. Dieser Einbau ermöglicht das Abwaschen in einem kleinen Spülbecken, das 2-flammige Kochen auf einem Gasherd und beherbergt den 42 Liter großen Kompressor Kühlschrank. Entspannt zu zweit kochen und den Abend genießen. Der weitere Platz von dem Möbel wird noch für die zweite Batterie, den Frisch- und Abwassertank und die Gasversorgung geschickt genutzt. Alles was jetzt noch übrig bleibt, ist Stauraum. Damit kann man schon was Anfang, auch als 4-köpfige Familie mit Hund. Blick in den Kompressor Kühlschrank vom Hotel California. Der California Coast und Ocean warten aber noch mit zusätzlichem Stauraum auf. Denn die zweier Sitzbank zum Umklappen hat eine riesige Schublade, die für den gesamten Proviant verwendet werden kann. Echt genial, auch wenn dadurch keine größeren Gegenstände wie Snowboards durchgeladen werden können. Im hinteren oberen Bereich befindet sich ein weiterer Stauraum, der meistens für die gesamten Klamotten unserer Kinder (in den Sommerurlauben) ausreichen musste. Ein zusätzlicher kleiner Tisch kann zudem noch neben der Sitzbank vorgeschoben und ausgeklappt werden. Wobei der von der Größe zu viert schon recht klein ist, aber für ein Frühstück mit Müsli und Kaffee noch funktioniert. Für ein gemütliches Frühstück zu viert ist der Tisch einfach zu klein. Hinten sind noch die zusätzlichen Fächer für den Stauraum zu sehen. Beim California Ocean ist das Aufstelldach zudem noch elektrisch. Die Gefahr, dass die irgendwann nicht mehr schließt ist natürlich immer da, aber das Dach kann wohl auch manuell geschlossen werden. Nach 8 Jahren mussten wir zudem die Hydraulikpumpe für mehrere hundert Euro tauschen lassen. Durch die Ausstattung kann ohne großes beladen sofort in den Urlaub oder in das Wochenende gestartet werden und alles ist dabei – das nenne ich Freiheit. Die Modelle sind aus unserer Sicht nicht flexibel genug. Standardmäßig können nur 4 Personen mitfahren. Die Küchenzeile nimmt jedoch auch bei Transporten wie Umzügen einfach zu viel Platz weg. Die Rücksitzbank ist so schwer, dass Sie praktisch nicht alleine ausgebaut werden kann (bei Einzelsitzen verhält es sich ähnlich). Wir sind im Schnitt wahrscheinlich 2 Monate im Jahr Campen, das sind gerade mal 16,6 %. Im Alltag wird der Bus jedoch täglich, also 83,3 % der Zeit genutzt. Für uns sind im Alltag immer mal wieder 6 Sitze sinnvoll, um auch mal ein paar Freunde oder die Eltern mitnehmen zu können, wenn man schon einen Bus hat sollte das doch das mindeste sein, oder? Dann haben wir auch noch das Thema Preis. Ja die Modelle sind alle sehr teuer und unterscheiden sich auch nur geringfügig von dem Mercedes Marco Polo. Aber für eine unflexible Lösung auch noch bis Euro mehr bezahlen, ist aus unserer Sicht keine Option. An dieser Stelle spielen natürlich die ganzen individual Ausbauer wie Custom Bus oder Spacecamper & Co. ihre Stärken aus. Sie bieten Konzepte die beides in einem vereinen und sehr flexibel sind. Um an dieser Stelle mal exemplarisch einen Punkt zu nennen: Die Rücksitzbank vom Spacecamper: Sie kann alleine in wenigen Minuten ausgebaut werden. Sie hat ein große Schublade mit jeder menge Stauraum, welche auch ausgebaut werden kann, um lange Gegenstände durchzuladen. Perfekt! Was spricht für den California Beach Der California Beach ist eigentlich ein Multivan mit einer soliden Camping Ausstattung. Der Beach kommt mit dem Schienensystem daher, über welches die Sitzbank flexibel verschoben werden kann und bis zu 2 weitere Einzelsitze zu der 3-Sitzbank ergänzt werden können. So entsteht 7 vollwertige Sitze mit Armlehnen und 3-Punkt Gurt. Die Sitzbank kann umgeklappt werden und zusammen mit dem Multiflexboard ensteht ein großzügiges Bett. Durch die sportliche Kontur der Sitzbank ist eine zusätzliche Matratze als Auflage zu empfehlen. Einziger Nachteil bei dem bett ist die Höhe in Schlafposition. Denn diese ist ein gutes Stück höher wie im Coast und Ocean, so dass bei aufrechtem Sitzen auf dem Bett unser Kopf am Himmel anstößt. Die Verdunkelung der Seitenfenster sehen beim Mercedes Horizon aus wie in einem Leichenwagen. Hier muss aus meiner Sicht noch mal nachgebessert werden. Fazit California Beach gegen Coast & Ocean Wer den Bus im Alltag nutzt und mehr wie 2 Kinder hat, wird den Beach lieben. Allerdings fehlt natürlich noch ein bisschen Zubehör, damit der Camping Urlaub auch wirklich perfekt wird. Hier findet Ihr ein paar Inspirationen und Ideen für flexible Campingmöbel zum Ausbau von eurem Campingbus. Mit 4 Personen sind tägliche Umbauten jedoch vorprogrammiert und dem kompakten Campingbus geschuldet. Der California Coast und Ocean ist perfekt für 2-3 Personen, da hier kein Umbau erforderlich ist. Abends gemütlich zu zweit kochen und essen, oben schlafen und am nächsten Morgen einfach unten wieder gemeinsam frühstücken. Das war auf unseren Ausflügen ohne Kinder immer was ganz besonderes! Out goes the California Beach (the kitchenless version, which is still available in Germany) and in comes the California Coast, which is basically a lower-spec’d version of the top-of-the-range California Ocean. Unlike the Beach, the Coast comes with a fully-equipped side kitchen with gas hob and sink, plus a top-loading 42-litre compressor fridge, although the galley is finished in Bright Oak wood effect to differentiate it from the Graphite Grey slate effect in the Ocean. Standard equipment for the California Coast includes adaptive cruise control, front and rear parking sensors, 16in alloy wheels, automatic lights and wipers, Crosswind Assist, Traffic Sign Recognition, Active Lane Assist, Hill Descent Assist, leather multi-function steering wheel, camper control panel with touchscreen, two 150Ah leisure batteries, outdoor table and chairs, an awning, and a manually-operated elevating roof with fully-sprung upper bed measuring by The Coast is available only with the 148bhp (150PS) 2-litre TDI engine and seven-speed DSG gearbox, with prices starting at £53,178 ex-works. Prices for the higher-spec Ocean version begin at £61,488, with options to upgrade to the 196bhp (199PS) engine (from £64,290) as well as 4Motion all-wheel drive (from £67,428). Standard equipment on the California Ocean has been enhanced to include a number of new features, and this model retains the electric version of the elevating roof. Additional spec items include a new grille with five chrome strips (rather than the plainer grille used on the Coast), LED headlights and tail-lights, a digital cockpit display, new LED interior and cupboard lighting, and a Discover Media navigation system with 8in touchscreen, eight speakers and rear-view camera. The Ocean also comes with Park Assist (which assumes control of the steering when parallel parking) and Side Protection (which warns if you’re getting too close to other vehicles, walls, pedestrians, etc). On both Coast and Ocean there are new alloy wheel designs, new exterior colours (including three duo-tone options – Candy White/Copper Bronze, Candy White/Bay Leaf Green, Candy White/Ascot Grey) and now three choices of canvas colour for the rising roof – Strawberry Red, Glacier Blue or Basalt Grey.
